An outdoor recreation hotspot, the County of St. Paul provides ample opportunity to explore our region. Find your adventure here in our region — whether you’re geocaching, taking a multi-day trip down the Iron Horse Trail, or exploring the attractions found in our region.
We’re one of the only Alberta counties that allow back-road access for off-highway vehicles!

Alberta's Iron Horse Trail
Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail (AIHT) is the longest completed section of the Trans-Canada Trail in Alberta. This 300-kilometre trail is open year-round for residents and tourists alike to enjoy and explore. From side-by-sides to snowmobiles, we offer recreation options for all types of off-highway vehicles.
We’re proud to have been awarded the Trans-Canada Trail Award recognizing our work with partners throughout northeast Alberta to build and maintain Alberta’s Iron Horse Trail!

Finding the History of the County
Though quaint, our museums and local sites are a perfect nod to the history and heritage in the County of St. Paul.
We are also proud of the Indigenous heritage in our region and the Indigenous communities we are proud to call our neighbours.
Mallaig & District Museum
A small museum housed in a donated church, displaying over 4,000 items in the collection. Grassy Island School, old farm equipment and more! Open during the summer.
Frog Lake National Historic Site
A deep look at the Indigenous history in our region, related to the tragic events of April 2, 1885.
Open every day from sunrise to 11 p.m.
Ferguson Flats
A region of historical importance, including the Fern Chapel School built in 1913 by early settlers.

Fort George & Buckingham House
Open May Long until Labour Day Weekend.
Check out Opponents and Neighbours, a history book on Fort George & Buckingham House and the early fur trade on the North Saskatchewan River from 1792-1800.
Heinsburg Water Tower
The only water tank that was constructed in Alberta for the railroad development in the 1920s that is still standing today.
Camping facilities available on site!
Mallaig Provincial Recreation Area
The Mallaig Beach area has over 100 years of use from families and visitors alike. Close proximity to the Iron Horse Trail!
