Fire Safety & Wildfire Preparedness
Learn how to reduce the risk of fire, understand fire restrictions and bans, and protect your home and property from wildfire.
Help Reduce the Risk of Fire
The County recognizes that residents and visitors may want to have open-air fires. Fire conditions can change throughout the year, so the County uses a Fire Advisory System to help manage the risk and set restrictions when needed.
Before burning, check the current fire status and follow any restrictions or bans that are in place.
Fire Safety Around Your Property
A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of a fire getting out of control:
- If you have a Fire Permit, contact Bonnyville 911 Dispatch Service at 780-826-7446 before lighting your fire.
- All approved Fire Permits are subject to Provincial or Local Fire Bans.
- Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure it is completely extinguished before you leave.
- Burn barrels must have a spark-arresting screen in place.
- Check brush piles that were burned over the winter to make sure they are fully extinguished and there is no risk of the fire restarting or spreading underground.
- During a Fire Ban, recreational ATV and UTV use is strongly discouraged until conditions improve. If you need to use an ATV or UTV, be prepared and equipped to extinguish a fire caused by sparks from the vehicle.

Understanding Fire Restrictions and Bans
The County’s Fire Advisory System has four levels based on current fire conditions.
No Restriction
Safe wood campfires are allowed on private land and in campgrounds. Other open-air fires require a Fire Permit.
Fire Advisory
Safe wood campfires are still allowed. New Fire Permits may be restricted or suspended, while existing permits may continue to be honoured.
Fire Restriction
Open-air fires are not allowed. Fire Permits may be suspended or cancelled, and no new permits are issued. Safe wood campfires are still allowed on private land and in campgrounds.
Fire Ban
No open-air fires are allowed on private land, in campgrounds, or on other lands within the County. All Fire Permits are suspended or cancelled, and no new permits are issued. Propane and natural gas-powered appliances are allowed.
For the complete rules at each level, review the County policy.
FireSmart – Wildfire Safety
